Spring has sprung! Nothing says "magic" like the Sun!

Winter can take a toll on my practice, but as soon as the tiny buds on trees begin to appear I can feel myself coming back to life. If you are like me, your magic is fueled by the Sun—the renewal of the Earth and new life beginning to emerge all around.

Nothing gets me more in the mood for spring and for summer than beginning to plan my garden! Today I'm going to provide a few simple tips to help you feel inspired to create a magic garden of your own:

What Kind of Garden Do You Want?

When it comes to deciding which garden is best for you, it is important to take a few things into consideration. The following questions can help you narrow down which garden is right for you.

  • What kind of magic do you do? Moon gardens, faerie gardens, and classic witch gardens are a few of the many options you have.

  • Which plants do you use the most frequently? One of the best parts of growing your own garden is the ability to grow your own herbal supply. Rosemary and Thyme are staples of my garden because I work a lot with faerie magic.

  • What do you want from this garden? As previously mentioned, you can grow your own ingredients or choose plants that attract certain things—such as luck, fertility and happiness.

  • Will these plants survive your climate? A practical and important question to ask yourself. I live in the desert, so I have to take into consideration how much sun my plants can tolerate, what level of heat they are able to thrive in and whether or not I’ll be able to give them the proper amount of water.

Decor is key

Once you’ve decided which direction you want to go in, the next part is accessorizing it. In my garden, I have wind spinners, solar elements such as glowing flowers and shiny mosaic orbs, elven, faerie and gnome figurines, stone steps, and a water bowl for all the creatures who come to visit! What kind of objects reflect you? What kind of energy are you trying to bring into your garden?

The Magic of Your Garden

Creating a relationship with your garden is so important. It needs to know who you are, what you want and what your purpose is for it. Whenever I take something from my garden, I always say thank you, and whenever I add anything I explain what I’m adding and why. You may feel a little silly, but I promise not only is it cathartic for you, it is very helpful for your garden as well!

Remember, while you may be able to see all the plants, that doesn’t mean all the inhabitants of the garden are so easily seen. From faeries to bees, from the spirits of the plants to the lizards, this is a small world you are creating. It is important to remember to have respect for everything that dwells in it, because they all have their purpose and their place in your garden. In fact, when you create a faerie garden, it’s good news to see it alive with all kinds of creatures.
